Increase your living space by following a simple technique
Replacing the screen tent
I really liked using my screen tent but I wanted a permanent solution. I searched the internet for new ideas. I developed a new religion. Ever idea I had I went to Pinterest and then Facebook groups. They became my new religion. For weeks I searched, grabbed screen shots to help shape my thinking.
Eventually I settled for a awning. Although it is similar to the tent. There are benefits a few benefits not seen using the screen tent.
- Easy to assemble and disassemble with 2 people.
- For 1 person there is a a special technique I will talk about later.
- It is mounted to the van. If wet, unlike the screen tent, it doesn’t get stored wet inside the van.
DIY Awning tent
To create the sides, I went to Harbor Freight and purchased a 10 and 15 foot UV resistant nylon mesh tarps. Some heavy duty magnets and clamps. The magnets held the tarp to the van and the claps held the mesh to the poles of the awning.
A opening was left at the front, to allow myself and the dog entry in and out of the space.
A tarp was placed on the ground to prevent bugs from crawling underneath. Another benefit from having a large tarp is I can take off my shoes outside the space and clean the dogs feet before he enters the van.
Another tarp was used to covered underneath the van where flying bugs can enter.
